Bullying and Harassment Policy
Bhaktivedanta Academy is committed to providing a safe, nurturing, and respectful environment for all students, staff, and families. Bullying and harassment are serious issues, and we strive to ensure that all individuals in our care are treated with respect, dignity, and kindness. This policy outlines the definitions, responsibilities, and procedures for effectively addressing them.
Definitions
- Bullying is intentional, aggressive behavior that involves an imbalance of power or strength and is repeated over time. This can include, but is not limited to, physical, verbal, social, or cyberbullying. Bullying behaviors may include:
- Physical aggression (hitting, kicking, shoving, etc.)
- Verbal aggression (name-calling, teasing, or threats)
- Social exclusion or isolation
- Cyberbullying (sending harmful messages, posting harmful or embarrassing information online)
- Harassment is unwelcome and inappropriate conduct based on an individual’s race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or any other characteristic protected by law. Harassment can be physical, verbal, or visual and includes actions that create a hostile, intimidating, or offensive environment for the targeted individual.
- Cyberbullying is bullying that occurs through digital platforms, such as social media, texting, or other online spaces. It includes spreading rumors, threats, or hurtful information via technology.
Scope of Policy
This policy applies to all students, staff, and families within the school community and covers bullying and harassment that occur:
- On school grounds
- At school-sponsored events and activities (whether on or off campus)
- On school transportation
- Online or through digital platforms, if the bullying or harassment affects the school environment or disrupts the educational process
Expectations of Behavior
All students and staff are expected to:
- Treat one another with kindness, respect, and dignity.
- Speak up against bullying or harassment when they see or hear it happening.
- Report any bullying or harassment incidents promptly to a trusted adult or school staff member.
Adults and school staff are expected to:
- Model positive, respectful behavior.
- Respond to all reports of bullying or harassment with empathy, seriousness, and care.
- Ensure that all students feel supported and protected in the school community.
Reporting Bullying or Harassment
Any student, staff member, or parent of a student who witnesses or experiences bullying or harassment is encouraged to report the incident immediately. Reports can be made to a classroom teacher, staff member, family liaison, or school administrator.
Reports can be made verbally or in writing. Reports should include as many details as possible, including:
- The nature of the incident
- The individuals involved
- The location and time of the incident
- Any witnesses to the event
Investigation of Reports
The school will promptly and thoroughly investigate all reports of bullying and harassment. The investigation will be conducted fairly and impartially, ensuring that all parties involved have an opportunity to be heard.
Based on the investigation's findings, the school will take appropriate disciplinary action, including counseling, mediation, or disciplinary consequences for the individual(s) involved in bullying or harassment.
Disciplinary Action
The consequences of bullying or harassment will vary depending on the severity and frequency of the behavior. Disciplinary actions may include:
- Verbal or written warnings
- Restriction of activities
- Behavioral interventions
- Mandated counseling
- Parent/guardian conferences
- Suspension or expulsion for severe or repeated incidents
The school will also work with students who are targets of bullying or harassment to restore their emotional and physical safety and implement appropriate interventions.
Prevention and Education
The school will provide regular programs and workshops to educate students, staff, and parents about the importance of creating a safe and respectful environment. These programs will focus on:
- Identifying bullying and harassment
- Teaching empathy and conflict resolution skills
- Promoting a culture of inclusion, respect, and kindness
School staff will also be trained to recognize, prevent, and respond to bullying and harassment.
Support Services
The school offers support services for students affected by bullying or harassment, including counseling referrals, peer mediation, and conflict resolution programs. These services aim to help students recover from the emotional impact of bullying or harassment and develop coping skills.
Confidentiality
All reports of bullying or harassment will be handled with the utmost confidentiality. Information will only be shared with those who need to know in order to address the situation effectively. However, in some cases, it may be necessary to involve parents or guardians to ensure a resolution.
Non-Retaliation
Retaliation against anyone who reports bullying or harassment or cooperates in an investigation is strictly prohibited. Any individual found to be retaliating will face disciplinary action.
Monitoring and Review
The school will regularly review and update this policy and its procedures to ensure they remain effective and responsive to the community's needs. The review process will consider feedback from students, staff, and parents.
