The Second Plane of Development

Dr. Maria Montessori described the years from six to twelve as the Second Plane of Development — a period marked by expanding imagination, growing moral awareness, and a deep desire to understand how the world works.

During these years, children move from the absorbent mind of early childhood into a reasoning mind capable of abstraction, analysis, and reflection. They begin asking larger questions: Why? How? What is just? What is my responsibility?

At Bhaktivedanta Academy, our Elementary program is intentionally developed to support this stage of a student’s growth.

Cosmic Education: Seeing the Whole

The Elementary years center on what Montessori called Cosmic Education — presenting knowledge as an interconnected whole. Rather than teaching isolated facts, we invite students into the grand story of the universe, the development of life, the unfolding of human civilization, and their place within it.

Through storytelling, research, experimentation, writing, and collaborative projects, students discover how the world works, how human choices shape its future, and that knowledge is interconnected.

Intellectual Growth and Moral Reasoning

Elementary students develop a strong sense of justice and fairness. In our classrooms, they engage in sustained research, interdisciplinary study, respectful debate, and collaborative problem-solving. They strengthen time management and independent work habits while learning to contribute meaningfully within their class and school community.

As their reasoning matures, so does their social awareness. Students come to see themselves as participants in a civilization with history, obligations, and a future they can help shape.

Deepening Spiritual Understanding

As imagination and reasoning expand, spiritual understanding deepens. Students continue to grow in their awareness of their identity as spiritual beings and explore their relationship with Krishna (God) through study, discussion, devotional practice, and service.

Bhakti becomes more intentional and reflective as moral reasoning connects with devotional purpose, giving meaning to students' choices, learning, and relationships beyond themselves.
