Bhakti Bhavan October Newsletter

Dear Families,

Hare Krishna! Autumn is upon us and the changing of the seasons has brought welcome relief from the Florida heat with cooler days and nights. We have been very busy throughout this last month with many different activities and events.

Safety First!- October is safety month! We started the month in our class by reading books and discussing what a community worker is and the different jobs they do. We had some local community helpers come to the school the other day to talk about fire safety- firemen and their fire truck. The firemen gave a talk for the children highlighting basic fire safety awareness tips; they tried on their gear, and gave us a tour of their truck, tools and equipment. They completed the visit by sounding the truck’s sirens and turning on the lights. Needless to say, all of the students were fascinated and have a newfound appreciation for firefighters. We are anticipating a visit from our local police officers at the end of this month.

Fall Garden- Most of you have probably noticed our beautiful new garden boxes right next to the lunch area. With the help of Tapasvini, an experienced gardener, teacher, and BANA board member, our class planted different seeds and starter plants for our fall garden. We are growing broccoli, cauliflower, kale, tomatoes, mint, lettuce, radishes, peppers, and flowers and the children delight in daily watering and observing the ongoing progress of their little garden.

Music and Movement- As part of our class group time on Friday mornings we incorporate music and movement. The children have a great time getting active and moving to the music. We explore different types of music and use various props such as beanbags, dancing scarves, rhythm sticks, and, led by Mother Karuna, we even do ballet (sh, don’t tell the boys that’s what we’ve been doing!) These activities are great for developing the children’s overall motor coordination, learning about rhythm and are just plain fun.

Spiritual Studies- In our spiritual studies we have been learning about Lord Krishna’s childhood pastimes. The children are really enjoying hearing stories, flannel boards, and singing songs about Krishna’s pastimes with his family and friends in Vrindavana. We have also begun practicing for the play we will perform at the temple for the Govardhana Puja festival. The play is accompanied by Mrigaksi’s ‘Makhanataskara’- butter thief- song and the children will enact this story on stage. I know the first thing that comes to your minds may be, ‘what costume will my child need?’ Well, if your child is a boy, he will be a monkey- please plan on him wearing solid, brown colored pants and shirt. Averie’s mother, Sandy, a skilled costume designer, has agreed to help out and sew monkey ‘hats’ and tails for all of the boys- thank you, Sandy! If your child is a girl, she will be a gopi and I know all of your girls have some pretty fantastically fancy gopi outfits! Stay tuned for more information about the performance.

North America, Spanish and More- In other unit studies, we are learning about the continent of North America, its basic geography, people, culture, and animals. In our class we study a different continent each month and infuse this study into all areas of learning. It provides a good foundation for the children to learn about being citizens of the world, promoting awareness, acceptance, and understanding of other countries and cultures. In science, we are learning about magnetism using hands on materials, classifying magnetic and non magnetic and in biology we are talking about which living beings are vertebrates and invertebrates. Did I mention that the kids are learning Spanish? On Monday afternoons we have Spanish class with Mother Radha. So far we have been learning greeting phrases; hola, como estas, buenos dias, etc.

Bhakti Bhavan Family News- We celebrated a couple of our classmates’ birthdays this month with our youngest and oldest students; Srinath turned 3 and Surya is now 6 years old. Happy birthday to them! I’d also like to congratulate Mahima’s family on the birth of their new baby, a little girl they’ve named Rucira.

As you can see, we’ve had a lot to keep us busy! Looking forward to sharing more with you as our school year unfolds.

Yours in the service of your children,

Vrinda

Introducing Scrip: The Fundraising Program That Works While You Shop

We’re pleased to share some exciting news about a new fundraising program for our school. It’s called “scrip”, and it’s the fundraising program that works while you shop.

Scrip is simply a word that means “substitute money” – in other words, scrip is gift certificates from national and local retailers. They’re the same gift certificates that you buy at the store. Many popular retailers participate in our scrip program including Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club, JCPenney, The Gap, Shell, Amazon.com and many, many others.

You’re probably asking yourself how these stores help us raise money. It’s simple -- scrip participating retailers agree to sell gift certificates to our school at a discount. Member families like yours buy the certificates for full face value, they redeem them for full face value, and our school keeps the difference as revenue. And scrip is exciting, because everybody wins:

  • The retailer gets cash up front and repeat business…
  • You get a powerful fundraising alternative that involves no selling…
  • Our school gets a regular source of revenue.

The beauty of scrip is that you put your regular household shopping dollars to work. You earn money for our school without spending a single additional penny. Just spend your regular shopping dollars with scrip at the stores that participate in the scrip program! And scrip can be used for just about any household purchase including food, clothing, entertainment, gasoline and even dining out.

We presented the scrip program during Wednesday’s family community meeting.  If you were unable to attend, just stop by the school office and I would be happy to explain it further or answer any questions you may have.

Bhaktivedanta Academy’s scrip program promises to be a simple and effective fundraising program. Sign-up online today at www.shopwithscrip.com and register using our school's enrollment code: 12AAB82228774.

September Family Community Meeting Recap

Dear Families:

Thank you to everyone who took time to attend our first family community meeting of the school year.  As promised, everyone in attendance got a gift - Bhaktivedanta Academy bumper stickers!

Below is a recap of the meeting plus some additional information:

Middle School

The preparations for our middle school are on-going.  Jaya Sri Radhe is currently working on curriculum development and other aspects of the program, specifically the feasibility of utilizing the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program as a framework for our middle school.

At present we project a minimum of $100,000 will be needed to establish the middle school.  We have an anonymous donor who has made a matching pledge of $30,000 toward this project.  They will donate $1 for every $2 given by others.  Over the next year we will need to raise the remaining funds.

We will be hosting an informational meeting about the middle school very soon.

Fundraising

We historically have 3 main fundraising activities each year:

  • Roses for Radha (starts next week)
  • Christmas Cookie and Fudge Sales
  • Spring Dinner/Event

In addition, we have 3 on-going opportunities for families, friends, and others to support Bhaktivedanta Academy all year long:

Box Tops for Education

We receive 10 cents for every box top redeemed.  Last year we raised $21 with only a few families participating.  Our first redemption period for this year is November 1st, so please start clipping box tops from the products you buy or have at home and bring them to the school office.

Target - Take Charge of Education

Register your Target credit card or bank debit card with Target and Bhaktivedanta Academy will receive a donation of 1% of everything you purchase at Target.  In addition, you will get 5% off of everything you buy at Target using your card.  With only 6 families participating we earned over $50 last year.  There is no easier way to support the school.  Sign-up today.

Scrip (New!)

With scrip you purchase gift cards for places you plan to shop, and use those cards instead of cash or credit. Many popular retailers participate in our scrip program including Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club, JCPenney, The Gap, Shell, Amazon.com, and many others.  Bhaktivedanta Academy receives 2% - 15% back on all scrip card purchases.  With ScripNow, cards from participating merchants will be delivered instantly to you via email. We encourage all our families to sign-up at www.shopwithscrip.com and register using our school's enrollment code: 12AAB82228774. Once registered, you can start ordering gift cards immediately.

A scrip packet will be going out in your child's Friday folder along with another email explaining the program in more detail.

Parent Teacher Organization

We reviewed the responses (linked here) to the the Parent Volunteer Questionnaire that went out in Friday folders and via email a couple weeks ago.  The responses are very encouraging, with 21 parents expressing interest in participating in many ways.

If you have not done so already, please fill out the online questionnaire

One of the areas of interest is in establishing a Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). Some initial purposes of the PTO would be:

  • Identify needs of the school
  • Build community
  • Increase family involvement
  • Be a bridge between the parent community and the school

We also shared and discussed a draft purpose statement:

In a mood of cooperation and responsibility, members of the Bhaktivedanta Academy Parent Association serve in partnership with the school's administration, to organize community building activities, encourage a spirit of volunteerism and inclusiveness amongst our families, and to enrich the educational experiences of our children by giving any needed support to their teachers and school.

Those who have expressed interest in being part of the PTO so far are:

  • Adi Gopi Kohair
  • Ananga Manjari Herrera
  • Ashley Khurana
  • Baladeva
  • Deepa & Tanmay Lele
  • Gaura Shakti Allin
  • Malati Lewandowska
  • Radha Dainton
  • Sandra Zappini
  • Saradiya Syer
  • Vaishnavi Cecil

A PTO formation meeting will be facilitated within the next couple of weeks for those interested in taking part and a Facebook group will be formed to help with communication and organization.

Discussion

A lot of ideas were shared during the discussion portion of the meeting related to promotion of the school, fundraising, and school schedule:

Write an article about the upcoming middle school and publish it online and in Back to Godhead (BTG) magazine to bring broader awareness of the school and to solicit financial support.

Collect and publish testimonials from parents and students.

Speak with Krishna.com about the possibility of putting a Bhaktivedanta Academy donation link into the check-out process on their website.

Research and present the history of the school along with  recollections and testimonials from alumni.

Hold a Bhaktivedanta Academy anniversary celebration.

Consider other school scheduling models, like year-round, with shorter summer breaks and longer winter and spring breaks.

Overall, we had a great meeting that generated a lot of enthusiasm and ideas to take forward into this school year. Again, thank you to everyone who participated.  It was a pleasure to spend time talking about how we can all be part of taking Bhaktivedanta Academy to new heights together.

Yours in service,
