Outreach Week 2016

Monday, Dec. 12 marks the official start of our annual Outreach Week. During the week we strive to foster a spirit of generosity and compassion toward others amongst our students. We do this by spreading goodwill in our local community by providing various opportunities for students to share Krishna consciousness with song, prasadam treats, and books in a safe and supportive way. As best as possible we try to involve all our students. This year we have the following activities planned:

Food and Necessities Collection Drive: Monday, Dec. 12 - Friday, Dec. 16 - A collection box will be at the entrance of the school for students to place items for a local family in need.

Suggested items are:

  • Gift cards for gasoline or grocery stores (Ward's, Publix, etc.)
  • Canned foods, like no sugar fruits (pineapple, apple sauce, etc.)
  • Personal care items (toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.)
  • Unseasoned canned beans (chickpeas, black beans, etc.)
  • Whole grains (brown rice, barley, etc.)
  • Seeds (sunflower, sesame, etc.)
  • Oatmeal
  • Mung beans
  • Nuts
  • Spices
  • Ghee or olive oil

Please do not deposit expired food, used items, or any food item which contains garlic and onions.  We are asking each family to contribute at least 1 item.  At the end of our collection these items will be delivered to the family via the New Raman Reti temple.

Store-to-Store Book Distribution: Monday, Dec. 12 - Friday, Dec. 16 - Students in Audarya Bhavan (grade 3), Madhurya Bhavan, and Krishna Sharanam will go in small groups on book distribution led by Mother Sukhada Elsey, class teachers, and/or parent volunteers.

Home and Senior Center Visits: Monday, Dec. 12 - Friday, Dec. 16 - Students in Audarya Bhavan and Madhurya Bhavan will be brightening the spirits of some senior citizens and/or homebound individuals by singing songs and distributing treats. In addition, our choir will be visiting residents of The Atrium at Gainesville to sing a selection of beautiful songs with a spiritual message.

As with any field trip, teachers will accompany the students on activities scheduled during the school day. Everyone will return prior to their class lunch time.  Click to complete an online permission slip for your child to participate. Please complete it before Monday, December 12.

Please make sure your child comes to school during these outing days with a water bottle and weather appropriate clothing.

We are looking forward to an fun and exciting Outreach Week!

Yours in service,

Visvambhara Das
Head of School

Notes and Reminders for Week of November 28

Welcome Back
We hope you all enjoyed a great fall holiday break. This holiday was an opportunity to reflect on what we are thankful for. We are certainly thankful for our great community of enthusiastic and supportive families. Thank you for entrusting us with the care and education of your most dear children.

Nataka-candrika India Trip
Nataka-candrika is now on a pilgrimage to India and will return after the Christmas holiday break. Tapasvini Peattie, an experienced teacher our students are familiar with, is filling in for Nataka while she is away. We are sure she will do an excellent job.

School-Branded Outerwear Available
In partnership with the Sklyarevsky Family (Daniel's parents), we are happy to offer school branded outerwear. We will be producing an athletic fleece jacket and hooded sweatshirt in youth and adult sizes in navy color. All will have the Bhaktivedanta Academy logo embroidered on the front. Samples in all sizes are available in the school office. Orders are due by December 9. Click here to get more details and to order.

Trashformations Award Winners
Our Krishna Sharanam MYP students participated in this year's Trashformations Recycled Art competition. It was held at the Florida Natural History Museum on November 18.

Under the guidance of Nandapriya, our MYP art teacher, student groups submitted four entries in the middle school division. Two of our four groups received awards:

Calypso, Isha, and Shyam received 2nd place

Chandramukhi, Karuna, and Radhe received The Waste Watcher award

Congratulations!

The Messenger 2: Planting the Seed
Our student drama commemorating the 50th anniversary of Srila Prabhupada formally establishing the Hare Krishna movement in the United States – Messenger 2: Planting the Seed is this Saturday at 5 p.m. Be on the lookout for communications from your child's class with specifics on when and where they need to be prior to the performance. We are also seeking help in several areas – prasadam preparation and sales, venue setup and breakdown, etc. Let us know if you are available to help.

Holiday Treats Fundraiser
'Tis the season to prepare and pack hundreds of tins of cookies and fudge for Bhaktivedanta Academy's annual holiday fundraiser. This is a big event that consistently raises several thousand dollars that goes toward classroom material and supply purchases for the school year. Oksana Stefanyshyn (Rasi's mom) will be heading up the effort this year. Be on the lookout for a volunteer request form that will be going out shortly. We always have a lot of fun making this fundraiser happen. We hope you will join in.
